Caractère d’un allèle, et par extension, du phénotype qu'il détermine, s'exprimant chez un hétérozygote plus ou moins fortement qu'un autre allèle (récessif) du même gène.

Lorsque l'hétérozygote a1/a2 possède le même phénotype que l'homozygote a1/a1, on dit que l'allèle a1 est dominant sur l'allèle a2 et l'allèle a2 récessif par rapport à l'allèle a1.
L'allèle récessif a2 ne s'exprime que chez un homozygote a2/a2.
